requiem for a terrorist

I can't even bring myself to comment, "UN Secretary General Kofi Annan praised Arafat's struggle to win international recognition for the Palestinian cause, as he ordered flags to fly at half-mast at the United Nations"

Allow me to make the following true substitutions in the quote: "Arafat" -> "a mass murderer",
"win international recognition for" -> "get help to",
"the Palestinian cause" -> "kill all the Jews"
Now we can restate, "UN Secretary General Kofi Annan praised a mass murderer's struggle to get help to kill all the Jews."

Like him or lump him, Arafat was the elected representative for the Palestinian people. Just like Dubya in the US. And even though many governments find Dubya distasteful, they still sent through the obligatory "congratulations", "looking forward to the new team", alliance letters. It's called protocol.

Besides, flag-waving is about all anyone has ever done for the Palestine, both Arab and Western nations. It doesn't cost much.

Arafat was elected? This column seems to imply otherwise. Why would the Palestinians be looking for help to hold elections if they had already had them?
The column is also anti-Bush (and anti-Sharon). So it seems unlikely to be part of some neocon-jewish conspericy to cover up legitimate Palestinian elections.
Or did the elections occur after May 24 of this year? Here's an article from September which also implies that no elections have been held.

Arafat was elected in 1996 (Jimmy Carter Cerified!) with no serious competition. That's once. Elections were to be held in 1999 but he simply canceled them, that's what Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan call legitimate.
