On Meet the Press

watched bits and pieces of a "Reverend Round Table". Includes liberal and conservative pastors. Overheard Sharpton say Jesus "would not use the power of the state" to further a political agenda. I need to get the transcript to be sure he said this, but it strikes me as pretty hypocritical, considering he tried to gain the highest power the state could offer. My feeling is these guys (including the conservatives) need to focus on their flock and get out of politics - if anything, they're turning people off from Christianity.

I agree that religious leaders don't need to be in the public spotlight talking politics. I'm not really sure what part they should play though. In that we (including religious leaders) as Christians should do what we can to facilitate the enactment of God's will on earth, involvment in the governing process makes sense. I think the problem begins when religious leaders start to focus on worldly issues. E.g. God probably doesn't care if you can't afford a color TV because welfare was cancelled. Likewise, He doesn't care if you can't afford a BMW because the government took 40% of your salary.
