French World Image

Don't worry, this is a foreign policy post... sort of. Zidane might well have cost France the World Cup by getting himself redcarded and not being there for the PKs. In doing so, though, he has done more than anyone in memory to reduce France's surrender monkey image.

Awesome header by Zidane! Perfect strike, completely on target and with great power!

Plus, he gave an Italian a real reason to be writhing in agony on the grass!

In all seriousness, this final was like a Bizarro World final. All the CW was thrown out the window: France dominates Italy in big games, Italy never wins PK shootouts, France is a classy team that never resorts to cheating, and Zizou is the classiest player.

Well, Italy won, on PKs; France's goal came from a dive (although later in the game there was a make-up no-call for an obvious penalty in the box); Zizou deservedly sent off for a classless act.

France should have won this game in regular time. Italy was the better team for much of the 1st half, but France's midfield squad of Vieira, Makalele, and Zidane turned it on and dominated play for the rest of the match, with France getting the best chances. Zizou, Ribery, and Henry all had chances that should have put the game away. However, Buffon and Cannavaro were world-class today, just as they have been throughout the whole tournament.

It's a shame Cannavaro didn't get the respect he deserves by getting the Golden Ball trophy.

Anyway, I'm still trying to get information on what Matarazzi said to Zizou. Speculation is that it was a racist epithet that caused him to just snap. Personally, I think he told him his momma was so fat, when she backs up you hear "beep-beep-beep".
